1994 BI - TP 94 / 55 Three - Dimensional SU ( 3 ) gauge theory and the Spatial String Tension of the ( 3 + 1 ) - Dimensional Finite Temperature SU ( 3 ) Gauge Theory

We establish a close relation between the spatial string tension of the (3+1)-dimensional SU(3) gauge theory at finite temperature (σ s) and the string tension of the 3-dimensional SU(3) gauge theory (σ 3) which is similar to what has been found previously for SU(2). We obtain √ σ 3 = (0.554 ± 0.004)g 2 3 and √ σ s = (0.586 ± 0.045)g 2 (T)T , respectively. For temperatures larger than twice the...

The Spatial String Tension in the Deconfined Phase of the ( 3 + 1 ) - Dimensional SU ( 2 ) Gauge Theory

We present results of a detailed investigation of the temperature dependence of the spatial string tension in SU(2) gauge theory. We show, for the first time, that the spatial string tension is scaling on the lattice and thus is non-vanishing in the continuum limit. It is temperature independent below Tc and rises rapidly above. For temperatures larger than 2Tc we find a scaling behaviour consi...

The Maximal Abelian Gauge in SU(3) Lattice Gauge Theory

We gauge fix 600 SU(3) β = 6.0 configurations on a 16 lattice to a simple form of the maximal abelian gauge. We project the SU(3) valued links to the U(1) × U(1) subgroup, and extract U(1) × U(1) and monopole string tensions. After gauge fixing to the indirect center gauge, the U(1)×U(1) links are projected to Z(3) and a vortex string tension is measured. The vortex and magnetic current densiti...

Unstable modes in three-dimensional SU(2) gauge theory.

We investigate SU(2) gauge theory in a constant chromomagnetic field in three dimensions both in the continuum and on the lattice. Using a variational method to stabilize the unstable modes, we evaluate the vacuum energy density in the one-loop approximation. We compare our theoretical results with the outcomes of the numerical simulations. PACS numbers: 11.15.Ha, 11.15.Tk Typeset using REVTEX

Topological susceptibility in SU(3) gauge theory.

We compute the topological susceptibility for the SU(3) Yang-Mills theory by employing the expression of the topological charge density operator suggested by Neuberger's fermions. In the continuum limit we find r(4)(0)chi = 0.059(3), which corresponds to chi = (191 +/- 5 MeV)(4) if F(K) is used to set the scale. Our result supports the Witten-Veneziano explanation for the large mass of the eta(').
